GARDENING HOW-TO

You do not need a green thumb to keep your plants and trees healthy and thriving. It does not matter if you are a plant beginner, a seasoned plant owner or a new landscaper. Learning to care for your plants and trees is a very rewarding and fulfilling journey! Sunshine Nursery’s goal is to help you pick plants suited to your site, learn more about plant care, avoid mistakes and help you enjoy plants indoors and outside more. All plant groups have needs of water, light and air but the quantity and intensity of each varies greatly. With advice and with experience you will learn to make adaptations to your garden to allow you to grow a wider variety of plants to your landscape.

Shade can be created with trees.

Drainage can be slowed or increased according to the plants.

The soils in the Turks and Caicos Islands are based on coral sand and fragmented limestone, which by definition have a high pH. This is not good for plants as it blocks the intake of nutrients that are in the soil. The pH can be reduced by adding organic material such as compost, manure or peat moss. A sulfur based “soil acidifier” will also reduce the soil pH.

Mulch is an organic protective cover placed over the soil to retain moisture, reduce erosion, suppress weed growth and provide a “finished” look to the garden. It will also serve to reduce the soil pH as it breaks down.

To encourage root growth, one deep watering is much better than watering several times lightly.

Fertilizers provide nutrients necessary for plant health and growth such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These are what N, P, and K stand for on bags of fertilizer. Apply fertilizer when the soil is moist and then water lightly.

There are many pest, weed and disease problems encountered which can be controlled by chemical products. These products control weeds, moss, insects, fungal diseases, rats, ants and slugs. Spray in early morning or late evening when there is little sun or wind. Labels indicate any potential risks that need to be avoided. Consider using natural alternatives such as garlic or neem oil.
